On 9 December 2024, Shabana Begum, a Friendship Community Medic-Aide (FCM) from Kaijar Char island in Gaibandha, was honoured with the ‘Best Social Worker’ award by the Directorate of Upazila Women’s Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh for her contributions to healthcare and women’s empowerment.

Bangladesh’s char islands face harsh climatic conditions and extreme isolation, making access to education, healthcare, and opportunities particularly challenging. Shabana’s journey exemplifies resilience and the transformative power of education in empowering women towards self-determination.

From Child Bride to Educator

Born in Bhatibochagari Char, Sundarganj, Shabana was the youngest of nine siblings. Despite financial struggles, she excelled academically. However, at just 14, she was married off to Md. Abdul Majid, a poorly educated day labourer. Motherhood and poverty soon followed, forcing Shabana into a life of hardship. With her husband frequently away for work, she took up tutoring to support her children.

A Catalyst for Change

In 2014, Shabana encountered an FCM, Rasheda Begum, and learned about the opportunity to train as a community health worker. Determined to improve her family’s circumstances, she underwent training in primary healthcare and mHealth. She regularly attended coordination meetings and referred patients to Friendship’s floating hospitals and health camps focused on maternal care and family planning.

Shabana’s dedication extended beyond healthcare. On 28 December 2021, she was elected to the Reserved Women’s Seat in the Union Parishad for Wards 4, 5, and 6, winning by a significant majority. Her advocacy for healthcare, child marriage prevention, and women’s rights earned her respect and influence within the community.

A Symbol of Empowerment

As an elected leader, Shabana played a vital role in improving access to healthcare and social development initiatives. Her efforts were recognised when she was awarded the ‘Best Social Worker’ title and the honour of ‘Joyita’ (brave woman) during the Begum Rokeya Day celebrations in Sundarganj. Looking ahead, Shabana aims to reduce maternal and child mortality, combat gender inequality, and expand opportunities for women and girls. Once a child bride trapped in poverty, she has transformed into a leader and health worker, inspiring change and hope in her community.
