Raising awareness and acting, at COP26 and beyond

La COP26 de Glasgow aura, après la COP21 de Paris en 2015, été la deuxième Conférence des Parties à la Convention-Cadre des Nations-Unies sur les Changements Climatiques (CCNUCC) à laquelle Friendship aura activement participé. Nous l’avons fait en force, en organisant pas moins de cinq événements et en contribuant à au moins six autres (à voir ou revoir via ce lien). Opérant au sein des communautés parmi les plus affectées au monde par la crise climatique, il est de notre responsabilité de leur donner une voix afin d’accentuer la conscience que les événements climatiques extrêmes auxquels l’Europe a fait face cette année – et qui en auront réveillé plus d’un – ne sont qu’un pâle reflet de ce qui fait, dès aujourd’hui, le quotidien de millions de personnes dramatiquement affectées. L’éditorial de Runa Khan “Kicking the Carbon Habit” dessine de façon poignante le défi auquel nous sommes confrontés, collectivement et individuellement !
Autant que d’alerter, il nous appartient d’agir et de partager les solutions d’adaptation que Friendship met en œuvre depuis désormais vingt ans dans des régions où la volatilité climatique et environnementale constituait une réalité incontournable bien avant que la crise climatique ne s’impose à la conscience de tous – ou presque. Qu’il s’agisse de nos bateaux-hôpitaux, des cliniques mobiles, des écoles et autres infrastructures démontables en un rien de temps, des villages surélevés, des installations photovoltaïques et de désalinisation, ou encore des programmes de préparation aux inondations et aux cyclones, le potentiel de mise à l’échelle est énorme et il est de notre responsabilité d’en assurer le partage.
En particulier, l’expérience acquise au courant des dernières années avec l’appui du Ministère de l’Environnement en matière de reforestation de mangroves nous a conduit à lancer, toujours à l’occasion de la COP26, le projet de de financement participatif Blue Mangrove Fund pour permettre à tous ceux – particuliers et entreprises – qui le souhaitent de participer activement à une action à la fois d’adaptation et d’atténuation. Raising awareness and acting, at COP26 and beyond
COP26 in Glasgow was the second Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in which Friendship was actively involved, following COP21 in Paris in 2015. We did so in force, organising no less than five events and contributing to at least six others (watch them again here). Operating in some of the world’s most affected communities by the climate crisis, it is our responsibility to give them a voice to raise awareness that the extreme climatic events that Europe has faced this year – and which will have awakened many – are a pale reflection of what is already happening to millions of dramatically affected people. Runa Khan’s editorial “Kicking the Carbon Habit” poignantly outlines the challenge we face, collectively and individually!
As much as we warn, it is up to us to act and share the adaptation solutions that Friendship has been implementing for twenty years now in regions where climate and environmental volatility was an inescapable reality long before the climate crisis became a matter of public awareness – or almost so. From our hospital ships, mobile clinics, schools and other quick-dismantle infrastructure, to elevated villages, photovoltaic and desalination plants, and flood and cyclone preparedness programmes, the potential for scaling up is enormous and it is our responsibility to share it.
In particular, the experience gained in recent years with the support of the Ministry of the Environment in the field of mangrove reforestation, led us to launch, also on the occasion of COP26, the Blue Mangrove Fund crowdfunding project to allow all those – individuals and companies – who wish to do so to actively participate in an action of both adaptation and mitigation.
