An Intercamp Football Tournament organised by Friendship, Dutch NGO KLABU, and French football club, Paris Saint Germain (PSG) became more than just a game for the Rohingya community in Ukhiya in December 2024. It became a celebration of solidarity and humanity among children.
In the heart of Rohingya Camp 19 in Cox’s Bazar, a game of football sparked joy and hope amidst the harsh realities and lived experiences of the Rohingya children. The Friendship Intercamp Football Tournament, hosted by Friendship’s Nutrition, Recreation, and Physical Fitness for Rohingya & Host Community Children (NRPFRHC) project along with KLABU and PSG, is a shining example of how sports can offer children a chance to bond over team play but also engage with empathy and tolerance.
A Celebration of Unity and Harmony
The football tournament, held between 3 December to 18 December, was a beautiful spectacle of youth and sportsmanship. 16 teams, representing four blocks of the camp, competed in an age-based tournament for children aged 10 to 13. The event was structured as a knockout competition, with eight matches in the first round, followed by the quarterfinals and two highly competitive semi-finals. With each match, the players demonstrated an unwavering commitment, showcasing their talent and passion for the game.
What made this event truly special was the participation and enthusiasm of children from both the host and Rohingya communities. Approximately 4,000 spectators, including families and camp residents gathered to cheer on their teams. Their support was loud and clear, with chants and applause that reverberated across the playground. This collective experience provided a break from the everyday challenges of camp life.
The tournament’s final match, held at B-Block’s playground, was a moment of triumph and celebration. The A-3 block football team emerged as the champions, while the runner-up team received their medals and accolades. The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Md. Fokhrul Islam, Camp In-Charge of Camp 19, Shyama Pada Biswas, Assistant Camp In-Charge, and Dr. Md. Sarwar Jahan, RRRC Assistant Health Coordinator. Md. Fokhrul Islam emphasised the importance of balancing academics with physical activities to ensure a healthy body and mind. Dr. Md. Sarwar Jahan highlighted the significance of sports in promoting mental wellbeing, particularly in the context of the camp’s conditions.
A Lasting Impact
The tournament served as a learning experience for the children, as they learned critical ideas and skills on leadership, collaboration, and teamwork, which will serve them well in the future. Respect for referees and fellow players and learning to appreciate different opinions and decisions as a part of discipline is a skill needed in their everyday lives, whether at home or in the community. The students understood how important sports are for health and fitness. A little healthy competition can promote joy and a sense of relaxation even in highly stressful environments. The tournament enhanced the children’s understanding of football rules and strategies, deepening their appreciation for the game and fostering sportsmanship and fair play.
Collaborating for Hope
For the past three years, the collaboration between Friendship, KLABU, and football giant Paris Saint Germain (PSG) has remained dedicated to improving the physical fitness and mental wellbeing of children and adolescents in Cox’s Bazar. The project currently operates in two main parts: one in seven host community secondary schools, and the other in the Rohingya camp itself, where a mobile sports library (MSL) and temporary learning sports and nutrition centre (TLSNC) provide sports activities and nutrition support. Rohingya Camp 19 in particular, home to more than 26,000 people, has faced immense challenges, including overcrowding and limited resources. Amidst this dense environment, the importance of recreation is undeniable. The Friendship Intercamp Football Tournament demonstrated the power of sports to foster personal growth, enhance physical health, and bring communities together. Even in the face of adversity, play can be a powerful source of joy and transformation.
