The climate crisis disproportionately affects women and girls, particularly those living in vulnerable, remote regions of the coastal belt of Bangladesh. Shyamnagar upazila (sub-district) in Satkhira zila (district) is one such area. Nestled in the Sundarbans with around 350,000 residents, the region faces increased water salinity and natural disasters, which in turn affects maternal and infant mortality, a growing concern.

Friendship Hospital Shyamnagar conducted a free health camp for pregnant women to address these health woes and reduce the risk of mortality. The health camp was inaugurated by Dr. Naheed Nazrul, Head of Friendship Hospital Shyamnagar (FHS). Medical services in the camp were provided by gynaecology specialist Dr. Mahfuza Alam and ultrasonologist and paediatric expert Dr. Shahriar Hasan.

Hospital officials also shared that various health camps held throughout the year such as eye treatment camps and special operations camps. After the inauguration ceremony, a tree plantation ceremony was led by Dr. Naheed along with the hospital doctors and administration officials.

Many women remain unaware of their health problems or choose not to speak about it out of shame. This silence could further exacerbate risks of mortality among women and infants. Health camps are easy, affordable ways of providing quick medical services to those in need.
